SUMMARY:

Higher Education Readiness Opportunity (HERO) summer program is a 1-2-week summer career and college exploration program for rising 10th and 11th grade students to help them increase academic behaviors, academic mindset and college and career knowledge to graduate from high school and plan for college.

The program takes place at Foss, Mt. Tahoma and Wilson High Schools during different weeks of the five-week period from July 8th August 16, 2019.

The Summer Program Assistant is responsible for providing program supervision, guidance and support to the CSF HERO students attending the summer program. Assistants will work closely with CSF staff to plan and implement summer program activities, including campus visits, field trips to increase awareness of potential careers and other group activities.

PROGRAM DATES:

  • HERO Summer Programs- CSF Tacoma
    o Orientation: Monday, July 1, 2019
    o Program: July 8th - August 16, 2019

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide administrative support and program preparation prior to, during and after one specific HERO program (listed above) for a total of 75 hours (total temp assignment).
  • Work on-site with CSF advisors and HERO volunteers to provide support and some student supervision for student arrival, welcome, orientation, and departure each day.
  • Provide general support to CSF advisors and HERO volunteers.
  • Assist with student attendance tracking during workshops and at other checkpoints throughout the program.
  • Assist with workshop and activity coordination and logistics.
  • Provide coordination and logistical support for opening and closing ceremonies.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Excellent organization, planning, and communication skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and develop positive relationships with students, counselors, volunteers, and CSF staff.
  • Ability to demonstrate patience, flexibility, empathy, professionalism, and good judgement even in stressful situations.
  • Respect for human diversity in all its forms, and commitment to facilitating a safe and inclusive environment for all students, volunteers, and staff.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION:

  • Must have access to reliable transportation to and from high schools.
  • Experience with event planning, administrative support, or youth development programming a plus.
  • Associates or Bachelor's degree or 1-2 years of work experience preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; reach with hands and arms and talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle or feel; frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee is regularly required to stand and walk. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work environment is moderately noisy. There is exposure to dust and changes in weather conditions. Employee must be able to handle stress that is involved in meeting strenuous customer deadlines, working in high volume areas, and be flexible and able to interact with employees and students of all levels.
